Leading from the front...

Leadership is without doubt a confusing term. It is not however a title. Having a title does not make one a leader. Nor does having authority going to automagically grant you leadership skills. Being a leader takes numerous skills and talents that have to be applied by way of example.

We need leaders now more than ever. Success of any endeavor is no longer going to wait upon a committee to make answers into solutions. So how to lead people?

The most important skill you can cultivate as a leader is to listen. A leader is not about delegation as much as being. An example is more enduring than any motivational speech. We do what we see others do and our leaders do. No talking in the world is going to change our basic nature as human beings.

We have to stop trying to manage people, we need to focus on the skill to manage things, and the distinct and separate skills it takes to lead people.

We take people that are good as individual contributors and we make them leaders, however what made them good managing their own production is NOT the same skills it takes to BE the example, and it is here we go wrong.

We need to offer leaders the training to be the leaders they can be for their people, for the success of those people, which translates to real success for their respective companies.

In the end it is all about the people.
